Prepress Checklist

In order to insure your project is printed on time, as you expect, and without incurring additional cost, please review the information below. Please contact your sales person if you have any prepress questions. If you are unsure of your files, our art department offers quality design and prepress services.

COMPATIBLE DESIGN SOFTWARE MADE FOR POSTSCRIPT LEVEL OUTPUT:
MAC
Quark XPress, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Freehand, Pagemaker*

PC
Quark XPress, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Freehand, Corel Draw, Pagemaker*

DESKTOP PUBLISHING SOFTWARE NOT COMPATIBLE WITH POSTSCRIPT LEVEL OUTPUT:
These types of files will likely present additional costs and a decision will need to be made as to how to proceed.
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, PDF**, and other similar desktop applications

*Pagemaker's current compatibility with newer operating systems and RIPs is not good and its future upgrading is questionable.
*PDF files are used for a variety of different purposes and can potentially be used for postscript level output. However, that completely depends on how the pdf is written. If we are provided with pdf’s that haven’t been created in the correct format, we cannot fix them after the fact. In this case, we can’t insure what results can be achieved.

OTHER REQUIRED ITEMS:

Provide a hard copy or a pdf and native files of the print project
Fonts (All components of any fonts used, including those used in any placed graphics)
Graphics (All placed graphics; please do not embed them)
All 4 color components are CMYK
All graphic components are a minimum of 300 dpi
Crop marks are included
Bleeds are included
File prints properly on customer's desktop printer

A NOTE ABOUT SOFTWARE APPLICATIONS
You expect a certain level of quality in the work that we produce for you. You have chosen the process of printing that involves the best equipment the industry has to offer. The advances in prepress technologies in recent years mean faster, more efficient, and better quality production of your work.

It is important to point out that the electronic equipment used in commercial offset printing plants such as ours is driven by professional software that requires a compatibility with the electronic files provided to us. In other words, artwork created with software that may look perfect on the designer’s computer monitor or print flawlessly to a desktop printer, may not necessarily work with professional postscript level output equipment.

There are many professional software applications on the market that are designed for postscript level production. There are also many popular software applications that are designed for other purposes. If we are provided electronic files that were created by software not designed for postscript level production, we are always happy to do what we can, but the time required, the labor costs, and the possible results will be affected.
